The Commonwealth Athletic Club of Kentucky announced today that Rick Pitino of the University of Louisville is the 2009 recipient of the Rupp Cup. In his eighth year at the University of Louisville, Rick Pitino has continued to climb the list of Division 1 coaching records. In his 23rd season as a head coach, at 4 different schools, Pitino entered this year’s NCAA Tournament with a career record of 544 wins against 196 losses (73.5%). Before their victories in this year’s Big Dance, Pitino 13 previous NCAA Tournament appearances produced the third highest winning percentage Tournament games among active coaches at 74.5% (35 wins against 12 losses). Rick Pitino belongs to an elite club of Division 1 coaches who have taken 4 different schools to the NCAA Tournament, and is the only coach ever to take 3 different schools to the Final Four. Pitino will receive the award on April 2nd in Detroit, Michigan. |
